Work with us
Proposals submitted to the eBERlight call are open to scientists focusing on areas aligned with the DOE-BER mission. This includes biological, geological, geochemical and environmental sciences, to address existing and new scientific challenges.
When applying, look for the “eBERlight” call or include “eBERlight” in your proposal title. It is recommended to get in touch with the eBERlight team before proposal submission. Our team works closely with users to fulfill the APS/DOE requirements regarding operation, training, safety practices, and shipping of samples for experiments.
Shipping Samples
Before sending a sample or shipment to eBERlight, you must first determine if the contents are regulated or hazardous according to Advanced Photon Source (APS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
If your samples and materials are non-regulated and are non-hazardous, you can ship to the following address.
Your Host Name c/o Xiaoyang Liu
Argonne National Laboratory
eBERlight
9700 South Cass Avenue
Building 435, Room D030
Lemont, Illinois, 60439
Phone: 630-252-0560
Regulated soils and Hazardous materials must follow APS, USDA, and DOT regulations. More information can be found on the APS website for shipping samples.
Feasibility studies
We offer beamtime for feasibility studies to interested researchers. This opportunity provides a unique chance to test experimental setups and gather information for full-scope beamtime proposal preparation.
APS
Researchers can access beamlines and other resources by registering with APS and submitting a proposal through the Universal Proposal System (UPS).
The APS User Checklist gives users step-by-step instructions.
Returning users should check the new procedures at the APS.
The Apply for Beam Time webpage provides all the necessary information for submitting a proposal and detailed instructions on how to use the UPS.
Strategic Partnerships
Partnerships are crucial to drive innovation and advance scientific research. The laboratory offers a wide range of solutions that leverage the state of the art facilities to create an effective and collaborative partnership for success. To discuss the benefits of working with us, contact eBERlight.
FICUS
We are partnering with several DOE-BER user facilities, including the Environmental Molecular Science Laboratory (EMSL) and Joint Genome Institute (JGI) via Facilities Integrating Collaborations for User Science (FICUS) program that provides access to several facilities.
Acknowledgment and Publications
The Department of Energy (DOE) requires that all publications resulting from experiments or work done at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) must acknowledge the APS and must be reported in the APS Publications Database.
To support the APS in maintaining a comprehensive record of research conducted at its facility, users whose work results in publication are required to include the beam time award DOI number(s) in hyperlink format (e.g., https://doi.org/10.1000/182) in any publication referencing their experiment. Each APS experiment is now assigned a unique digital object identifier (DOI), which users can find under the "My DOI" tab in the APS User Portal. Starting with the 2025-2 user run, APS will email the DOI number to all individuals listed on the experimental safety assessment form (ESAF) once the ESAF is posted.
Example:
Results in this report are derived from work performed through the eBERlight program, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Biological and Environmental Research at the Advanced Photon Source This research was performed on APS beam time award(s) (DOI:
eBERlight users should also include a statement with the beamlines, sectors, and/or resources used.
Examples:
The use of the LS-CAT Sector 21 beamlines was supported by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Michigan Technology Tri-Corridor Grant 085P1000817. Access to eBERlight at Sector 84 was possible through funding provided by DOE contract DE-AC02-06CH11357.
